Education Volunteer

Help education staff with tours, workshops, and demonstrations at the museum, at area schools, and at STEM Fairs

This position provides assistance in the delivery of the Museum’s educational programming. Duties include working with a variety of ages to present engaging museum tours, workshops, and special events.

Hours: flexible and varies with need based on tours scheduled, usually during museum hours, Mon – Fri 9-4 and Sat 10-2. Education volunteers are asked to commit to at least one year of service.

Qualifications: Education Volunteers should have some industry OR education experience relevant to electronics or electrical engineering, or to other STEM related topics. Prior museum experience is not required. They should enjoy working with the public and have excellent oral communication skills.

General Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be willing to undergo a basic background check.
  • The museum will give the volunteer a manual that outlines museum procedures and policies; volunteers will adhere to the policies and procedures detailed in the manual

Training: NEM volunteers will receive New Volunteer Orientation training at the onset of their service with the museum. Museum staff will provide additional on-the-job training.

Welcome Desk Volunteer

Be a friendly face at our front desk to welcome visitors to the museum

Volunteers in this position will run the museum Front Desk. Duties include greeting and assisting visitors, and administering sales for the admissions desk and museum store.

Hours: Front Desk volunteers must be available EITHER from 9:30am to 2:30pm on one regular Saturday each month, OR on Mondays from 8:45am to 4:00pm (Mondays can be broken into two shifts). Front Desk volunteers are asked to commit to at least one year of service.

Qualifications: Front Desk Volunteers should enjoy working with the public and have excellent communication skills. They should have the ability to operate a small-scale cash box, and to work independently.

Collections Volunteer

Work with our Director to catalog and care for the thousands of objects in our historical collection

The Collections Volunteer will assist in the registration and management of the museum’s collections including objects, photographs, and archival material. Duties include assisting to process new acquisitions and inter-museum loans, prepare objects for storage or display, and maintain the collection database.

Hours: Hours can be flexible, but must be within museum operating hours M-F, 9-4 and the volunteer will need to commit to regular schedule of 8-20 hours a month.

Qualifications: Collections Volunteers should be organized, detail oriented, able to work independently, and willing to follow museum policies on safe object handling. Volunteers in this area should be able to lift up to 30 pounds and be able to wear nitrile gloves.

  • The museum will give the volunteer a manual that outlines museum procedures and policies; volunteers will adhere to the policies and procedures detailed in the manual

Fabrication & Maintenance Volunteer

Help create and maintain our exhibits, interactive demonstrations, and collections storage

Some volunteers in this position will be assigned as Steward for one or more galleries in the museum. Duties include cleaning the fixtures and objects in the assigned Gallery, monitoring integrity of fixtures, signs, and objects, and creating and maintaining information in the Gallery Reference Book.

Other volunteers in this position may work in a collaborative group that meets on Mondays to tackle a variety of projects ranging from developing hands-on demonstrations to fabricating and maintaining exhibit structures.

Hours: Hours can be flexible, but must be within museum operating hours M-F, 9-4 and the volunteer will need to commit to regular schedule of 8-20 hours a month.

Qualifications: Volunteers in the position should enjoy working with others in a collaborative environment, be able to work independently, and be comfortable undertaking moderate physical effort.
